The reporter learned from the Institute of Geochemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences on the 7th that the world's first 1:2.5 million lunar geological map developed by a Chinese team of scientists was completed. The results of the lunar geological map were published online in the international comprehensive journal Science Bulletin on May 30.

In recent years, China's lunar exploration project has achieved rich exploration data and research results, but there is no comprehensive research result with high integration and large display. At the same time, although the international lunar exploration activities are in the ascendant, the development of the lunar geological map is obviously lagging behind.

In 2015, the Institute of geology, Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, the National Astronomical Observatory, Chinese Academy of Sciences and China University of Geosciences (Beijing) completed the Chinese and English versions of the 1:2.5 million geological map of the moon (Hongwan sheet) and published it publicly. However, the geological map only covers one thirtieth of the lunar sphere.

Therefore, the Chinese team of scientists has carried out the development of a 1:2.5 million digital geological map of the whole moon to provide a more comprehensive and detailed scientific description of the geological phenomena on the moon.

Under the leadership of academician Ouyang Ziyuan and researcher liujianzhong, the Institute of Geochemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, as the leading unit, in conjunction with Jilin University, Shandong University, the Chinese Academy of Geological Sciences, the Chinese University of Geosciences (Beijing), the Institute of Geographical Sciences and resources of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and other units, based on the data of the Chang'e project in China, and making full use of other international lunar exploration data and research results, through the "Strata" of the lunar surface Based on the study of morphology, composition, structure and geological age, a new lunar geological chronology is proposed, a division system of impact crater materials, impact basin construction, rock types and structural types is established, the standards, processes, methods and schematic diagrams for the preparation of lunar geological maps are formulated, and the world's first 1:2.5 million lunar geological map is completed by using GIS platform.

This 1:2.5 million lunar geological map comprehensively expresses the lunar geology and evolution information, which can provide important basic data for lunar scientific research, exploration planning, landing site location, etc., and also provide a reference for the preparation of other astrogeological maps. The 1:2.5 million geological map of the whole month is compiled in both Chinese and English, and is published in both paper and electronic versions by the Geological Publishing House. It also includes the structural outline map and rock type distribution map of the whole month. The compilation and research of geological maps has been supported by the Ministry of science and technology, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, the Foundation Committee, the Institute of Geochemistry of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and other departments.
