Senators have reason to be worried. Many applications collect information from users and sell it to data brokers, who in turn sell it to other parties.

According to the letter, since Texas is planning to pay bounties to residents who report abortions in other places, these brokers may also sell the data to anti abortion prosecutors or "even vigilantes".

The letter asked these companies to undertake to review and update their policies on the use and distribution of data to protect the safety of women seeking abortion.

The letter was signed by four Democratic senators, including Edward Markey and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, Corey Booker of New Jersey, Ron Vuitton of Oregon, and Bernie Saunders, an independent senator from Vermont.
