Japan's Toyota Motor Company said on Monday that it had failed to achieve its global production target in April because the outbreak of COVID-19 and the shortage of parts delayed the recovery after the pandemic. The world's largest auto manufacturer by sales last month produced 692259 cars, down 9.1% from the same period last year, failing to reach its previous goal of producing about 750000 cars worldwide.

These figures raise questions about the severity of the impact of the epidemic on the supply chain and how this disruption will affect production in the coming months.

Toyota last week lowered its global production target for June to about 800000 vehicles, and hinted that it might cut its annual production plan of 9.7 million vehicles.

The company also said on Monday that global sales in April fell 11.1% year-on-year to 763708 vehicles. Domestic sales in Japan, excluding Daihatsu and Hino Motors, fell nearly 17 per cent to 103143 vehicles.
