Against the backdrop of inflation, soaring energy costs, continued supply chain failures, and the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, IC insights still expects the total semiconductor sales this year to increase by 11% - the same growth rate as the same period last year. And reached a record US $680.7 billion in sales this year.

IC insights updated the McLean report and raised and lowered the sales growth forecast of several major semiconductor product categories this year (as shown in the figure below). These changes offset each other, keeping the overall growth of the semiconductor market at 11% in 2022. The report believes that the downward pressure on the economy poses a challenge to global growth and the situation is grim.

The report update in the second quarter of this year raised the sales forecast of micro component IC from 7% at the beginning of this year to 11% in 2022. This growth was driven by the embedded MPU category (now up 12% from 9% before) and the cellular micro application processor (up 22%, much higher than the 10% forecast in January).

The report's overall forecast for the growth of IC total sales in 2022 remains unchanged. It is expected that this year it will increase by 11% to a record US $567.1 billion. The report also believes that the forecasts for Analog IC (up 12%) and logic IC (up 11%) remain unchanged.

The report also lowered the total sales forecast of this year's non IC semiconductor market categories - optoelectronics, sensors and actuators, and discrete devices (o-s-d). They account for about 17% of the total global semiconductor revenue, and are now expected to grow by 9% to US $113.6 billion, mainly due to the impact of CMOS image sensors and lamp devices (mainly light-emitting diodes LED). However, the weakness of Optoelectronics was partially offset by the strong growth of discrete semiconductors, mainly due to the tight global supply and the rise of average selling price (ASP), and the higher sales growth of power transistors (now expected to increase by 11% by 2022) and diodes (expected to increase by 10%). The report's strong growth forecast for sensor / actuator semiconductors of 15% remained unchanged.
