Infineon plans to accelerate the expansion of production capacity in the future to cope with the semiconductor shortage in many industrial fields. Rutger wijburg, the new chief Production Officer of Infineon, said in a recent media interview that Infineon will outsource a new wafer factory every two to three years in the future, compared with the previous frequency of four to five years. He said that the current market situation calls for accelerating investment, and Infineon may also promote multiple large-scale construction projects in parallel in the future.

One of the reasons for this decision is that the current major foundries have maintained high capacity utilization and only accept orders with long delivery time. Rutger wijburg pointed out that another reason is the delivery time of semiconductor equipment. "Now the 12-month delivery time of equipment is very normal, and even the 18 month or longer delivery time is becoming more and more common."

In addition, he also said that the semiconductor market environment is good. Many market research institutions such as McKinsey and others predict that the annual sales of the semiconductor industry will increase by 8% in the next decade, including the automotive semiconductor market.

Rutger wijburg recently succeeded Jochen hanebeck as chief Production Officer, who in turn succeeded Reinhard Ploss as chief executive officer. Before joining Infineon in january2018, wijburg served as the senior vice president and general manager of lattice core in Dresden.
