The patent purchased by oppo from sharp also shows the further cooperation between the two sides in the patent field and highlights oppo's active patent strategy. In addition to applying for and obtaining patents worldwide, oppo has always been interested in purchasing high-quality patent assets. According to the author, in May 2021, oppo acquired at least 47 wireless communication patents from ZTE, covering base stations, terminals, networks and wireless communication; In December 2020, oppo acquired a family of American patents related to wireless standards from a research company called Lambert communication in Shanghai. Almost at the same time, oppo acquired four family video coding (h.266) patents from Korean inventors. After several years of practice, oppo has formed a set of distinctive, fine and efficient patent trading mode, that is, focusing on 5g communication standards, AI, imaging, fast charging and other cutting-edge technology fields, purchasing a small number of patent combinations that have the potential to become standard necessary patents (SEP) from enterprises, research institutions or individuals, and refining and supplementing the existing patent layout in key fields.
Public statistics show that in the field of 5g communication standards, oppo has completed at least 4600 + family global patent applications and claimed 2000 + family 5g standard patents in ETSI; In the field of AI, there are more than 2600 patent applications worldwide, mainly in computer vision, voice technology, natural language processing, machine learning, etc; There are about 10100 global applications for image patents and more than 4200 authorizations; There are about 3360 global applications for fast charging patents, with a cumulative authorization of about 1866.
It is worth mentioning that the transaction with sharp is in line with oppo's previous areas of concern and trading habits, and once again confirms the accuracy and maturity of oppo's patent trading model.
Thanks to its active patent strategy, oppo has made great achievements. In the 2021 PCT international patent application ranking released by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), oppo ranks sixth and has ranked among the top 10 PCT applications in the world for three consecutive years. At present, oppo has distributed patents in more than 40 countries and regions around the world. The data show that as of March 31, 2022, oppo has more than 77000 global patent applications and more than 38000 global authorizations.
