Halo has made a lot of significant changes to the established world outlook and plot of halo, and episode 8 seems to be the biggest change to halo. Looks like the sergeant just lost his virginity. (Note: the following contains the spoilers of the halo TV Series)
It's important to break away from the halo. In the game, john-117 is described as a abstinence super soldier who only shows a sentimental attachment to his holographic partner Cortana. He has never had sexual experience because he was kidnapped as a child to join the Spartan project.
The halo TV series did not strictly abide by this setting in the first season. The sergeant played by Pablo Schreiber frequently took off his helmet and processed a lot of memories and emotions after encountering the forerunner artifact. This artifact happens to be the reason for John's sexual contact in Episode 8.
The TV series has added a new role - makee played by Charlie Murphy, a human who was kidnapped by the Star Alliance when he was young and promoted to be a powerful figure in the Star Alliance. John and makee seem to be the only creatures in the galaxy that can interact with artifacts. After experiencing the shared vision of the mysterious halo station in Episode 6, the two characters "succumbed to the surge of hormones" and had sex in Episode 8. To make things more strange, Cortana watched the whole journey.
This plot turn has caused criticism and anger among halo fans. Not only is the idea of having sex with the sergeant unacceptable to some people, but the eighth episode also uses the relationship between the sergeant and makee to lay the foundation for the drama version of "Zhiyuan star falling". Although she was in a dilemma between her new love for john-117 and her loyalty to Star Alliance, makee finally chose the latter and sent the location of Zhiyuan star to Star Alliance. Because he mistakenly believed makee, the sergeant's hands were stained with blood.
